Rick welcomes André Gremillet to unleashed. André is the President & CEO of The Cleveland Orchestra, which was founded in 1918 and is recognized as one of the world’s finest by the likes of the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. In part one, André shares how a conservatory-trained pianist from Quebec went on to run orchestras in New Jersey, Melbourne, and Northeast Ohio and what he’s learned along the way.
About André Gremillet: André began his tenure in January 2016 as the ninth Executive Director of The Cleveland Orchestra, and was appointed its first President & CEO in 2018.
Under his leadership, The Cleveland Orchestra celebrated its 2018 Centennial with critically- acclaimed performances under Music Director Franz Welser-Möst in Cleveland, New York, Tokyo, and Vienna, where they presented the first staged opera performances in the history of the Musikverein with Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen. In 2019, The Cleveland Orchestra returned to China after an absence of over two decades for a highly successful tour, including two live-streamed performances from Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts that reached an audience of 2.3 million.
Since Gremillet began his tenure, The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director Franz Welser- Möst have seen their successful partnership and artistic accomplishments gain even wider recognition, including references by the New York Times as “America’s most understatedly amazing orchestra” (2018) and “America’s Finest, Still” (2020). Gremillet has also overseen a significant expansion of the Orchestra’s education programs, as well as the creation of The Cleveland Orchestra’s own record label, with two critically-acclaimed releases in 2020: A New Century, a collection of six live recordings, followed by Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 (The Great). In the fall of 2020, the Orchestra launched its new streaming platform, Adella, featuring, among other content, the In Focus digital concert series and On a Personal Note podcast.
Prior to joining The Cleveland Orchestra, André Gremillet served as Managing Director of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) from 2012 to 2015. During his time in Australia, the MSO made several recordings for Chandos under Music Director Sir Andrew Davis, toured Europe with debuts at the BBC Proms, Edinburgh Festival, and the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and created a Chinese New Year concert that has since become an important annual tradition in Melbourne.
Previous to his tenure at MSO, Gremillet was President and CEO of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra from 2007 to 2012 after having served as President of the renowned pipe organ building firm Casavant Frères for four years, shortly following his graduation from business school. Born near Montréal, Canada, and a conservatory-trained pianist, Gremillet holds a master’s degree from the Mannes College of Music and an MBA from McGill University.
