Jason welcomes Paul Smiley to the podcast. Paul is the Founder and President of Sonoran Technology and Professional Services, an award-winning company that provides services, training, and technical solutions for federal and state agencies. He’s a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel with over 1,900 flying hours and a combat veteran of Operation Desert Storm. Paul shares how his military experience prepared him for business, why organizations struggle with getting their culture right, and the importance of diversity of thought.
About Paul A. Smiley: Paul is the Founder and President of Sonoran Technology and Professional Services located in Goodyear Arizona. Since starting Sonoran Technology in 2007, he has successfully led the company through our nation’s worst recession since 1932 by developing a business model that focuses on exceeding customer expectations, building strong relationships, mitigating risk, while at the same time minimizing operating cost.
As a result, Sonoran Technology was recognized as one of the most successful and fast-growing small businesses in the U.S. providing professional service support to the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Army, General Services Administration and other federal agencies. By the end of 2022, Sonoran Technology will have over 250 employees working in 20 states and at overseas military bases.
Mr. Smiley volunteers his time as an active and highly engaged board member at Arizona State University New College Dean’s Advisory Board, U.S. Small Business Administration’s “Boots-to-Business” Program, Estrella Mountain Community College President’s Advisory Board, West Valley Defense Alliance Board, at-large contributor to the Arizona Chapter of the Tuskegee Airman, and several education and veteran related initiatives. An avid supporter and champion for small businesses, he laid the groundwork for the City of Goodyear’s first Annual Small Business Symposium. Additionally, Mr. Smiley is a mentor and coach for seven small businesses and regularly participates as a panel member and advocate for regional and national small business concerns.
In 2016, Mr. Smiley was honored as the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Small Businessperson of the Year – Arizona. In 2017, he was selected and honored by the Phoenix Business Journal as one of 25 Most Admired Leaders. In 2019, his company
Sonoran Technology, was the SBA’s National 8(a) Graduate of the Year. Most recently, in October 2021, he was inducted into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society in honor of his military service, business philanthropy, and community leadership.
From 2003 to 2008, Mr. Smiley served as an adjunct professor at Arizona State University School of Global Management and Leadership where he taught in the undergraduate and graduate programs. Mr. Smiley is a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel (Lt. Col) with over 1,900 flying hours in the E-3 AWACS aircraft. He is a combat veteran of OPERATION DESERT STORM, served twice as a Squadron Commander, Deputy Group Commander, and Pentagon action officer for the Joint Chief of Staff where he served as an Air War Planner and Joint Air Operations Strategist. Lt. Col Smiley is a graduate and former instructor at the Air Force’s prestigious Fighter Weapons School. During his 25 years of honorable and dedicated service he was awarded multiple medals and citations.
