Katie wraps up her conversation with ChangeMaker Tony Kimbrough, the CEO of VEO, the Veterans Empowerment Organization, the largest nonprofit in Georgia providing direct services to military veterans in need. Tony is a decorated veteran, having served in the national guard as a military intelligence officer. Following his military career, Tony found success as a civilian in nonprofit management, and now he’s on a mission to help other veterans succeed.
About Tony Kimbrough: Tony is the CEO of Veterans Empowerment Organization, the largest nonprofit in Georgia providing direct services to military veterans in need. He is an experienced nonprofit leader and Army veteran who shares VEO’s commitment to empowering veterans along their journey to self-sufficiency.
Kimbrough spent four years with Mannheim Auto Auctions in Georgia, North Carolina, and Arizona before moving into the nonprofit sector. He worked with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and then with the YMCA.
He was the executive director of local YMCAs in Pittsburgh and Tampa. In 2015, he was recruited to Atlanta to head the Arthur M. Blank Family Youth YMCA. Kimbrough became Executive Director of Atlanta’s East Lake Family YMCA in 2017. He assumed his current position in February 2021.
Kimbrough joined the South Carolina Army National Guard during his junior year of college at The Citadel. His subsequent eight years of service as a military intelligence officer included one year with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan, where he led an embedded training team.
A native of Kentucky, Kimbrough comes from a long line of military veterans. He grew up in Metro Atlanta. He has been active on many boards and committees supporting veteran and youth initiatives. He truly enjoys coaching youth baseball and basketball in his community. Kimbrough continues to be involved as an alumnus of The Citadel. He resides in Snellville, Georgia, with his wife, Sarah, and two children.
