There are many reasons why physicians make great entrepreneurs: They’re committed to continuous professional development and learning, they want to make a difference in people’s lives, AND they have the tenacity and determination to thrive in ultra-competitive environments. This week, Joe welcomes Dr. Arash Aftabi and Dr. Farnoush Fadavi, a husband-and-wife dental surgeon team from Southern California that turned a personal project into a business called Bala. On the podcast, Arash and Farnoush share the inspiration for becoming entrepreneurs and the science behind their plant-based enzyme & electrolyte mix designed to hydrate and supercharge your daily life.
About Arash and Farnoush: Dr. Arash Aftabi and Dr. Farnoush Fadavi are a husband-and-wife dental surgeon team from Southern California that have been running their practice together for over 20 years. Dr Aftabi earned his DMD at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine for Periodontics and Implantology, and Dr. Fadavi earned her DMD at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine for Endodontics. Dr. Aftabi and Dr. Fadavi met during their residency program at Boston University. This was also during the time that Dr. Aftabi was studying inflammation and enzyme therapy.
After graduating, they moved to California to open their practice and continued studying plant-based enzymes in order to help their patients with their post-operative recovery. They have seen first-hand the potential for plant-based enzymes and began the first formulations for Bala.
In 2018, Dr. Fadavi sustained significant injuries following an accident. She underwent surgery and was left with long-term pain that cut her career short. In order to manage her day-to-day life, she needed to take painkillers, but was unable to tolerate the side effects. We pushed to finish formulating Bala to provide her a natural alternative from her pain medication. When we saw how effective Bala was for her, we knew we could help more people.
Bala started as a personal project, but grew into a greater mission: to help more people regain their freedom of movement and provide a healthier way to hydrate and recover. Today, Dr. Aftabi and Dr. Fadavi continue to pursue this mission
